The short answer: HDPE for cold and impact, PP for heat and stiffness
Both HDPE and PP are polyolefins — food-safe, non-absorbent, chemically resistant and fully recyclable — so on most day-to-day questions they behave alike. The differences that actually decide a purchase are four:
- Cold and impact toughness: HDPE stays tough in freezers and takes drops without cracking. PP is more brittle in the cold. - Heat tolerance: PP survives hot-wash and steam sanitation and warm climates better than HDPE. - Stiffness: PP is stiffer per gram, so it resists sagging and holds a rack load with thinner walls. HDPE flexes more but absorbs abuse. - Cost: HDPE resin is usually a touch cheaper per kilo, but PP's stiffness can mean a lighter, thinner part for the same rigidity.

Neither material is "better" outright — they trade cold/impact toughness (HDPE) against heat resistance and stiffness (PP).
Temperature: the single biggest decision driver
Temperature separates the two materials more clearly than anything else.
Cold / freezer / cold-chain → HDPE. HDPE retains impact strength down to roughly -40°C. Drop a loaded HDPE pallet in a freezer and it flexes; drop a cold PP one and it can crack. For blast-chill, frozen food, dairy and any sub-zero handling, HDPE is the safer spec.
Hot-wash, steam sanitation or hot climates → PP. PP holds structural integrity at higher temperatures (indicatively to around 100°C), which is why crates and totes that go through hot sanitation cycles are almost always PP. HDPE softens sooner under repeated heat.

- Chemical resistance: Both resist a wide range of acids, alkalis and solvents. HDPE has the edge on environmental stress-crack resistance (ESCR) — important for containers in constant contact with detergents, surfactants or agricultural chemicals through repeated fill-and-empty cycles. On a per-kilo basis HDPE resin is usually slightly cheaper, but that is not the whole cost story:
- Part weight: PP is less dense (~0.90 vs ~0.95 g/cm³) and stiffer, so a PP box can meet the same rigidity with thinner, lighter walls — cutting both resin and freight cost. - Freight & stow: These products ship by sea, so the number of units you fit in a container matters as much as unit price.
