The one number that decides it: your empty-return leg

Every reusable container makes two journeys — loaded out, and empty back. On the loaded leg a collapsible box and a rigid box are identical: same footprint, same cube, same freight. The entire economic case for collapsible lives on the *return* leg.

When a rigid pallet box comes back empty you pay to move air. When a collapsible box comes back, its sidewalls fold onto the base and it ships flat. The saving is set by the fold ratio — folded height ÷ erected height.

Load ratings: collapsible does not mean flimsy

The common objection is that a hinge is weaker than a solid wall. On a well-engineered folding pallet box that is not true for the loads that matter. Our collapsible bulk containers sit on a reinforced 9-foot (nine-leg) Chuan-grid base and are family-rated at 4-5 t static and 1.5 t dynamic — the same order of magnitude as a rigid pallet box of equal footprint.

What the ratings mean in practice: - Static load (4-5 t): weight the box can bear when sitting still, i.e. how many units you can stack in storage. - Dynamic load (1.5 t): weight it can carry while being lifted and moved on a forklift or pallet truck — the number that governs how much product goes *in* each box.

Lighter collapsible totes and folding crates are rated by stacking load instead: our folding EU boxes carry 80-150 kg stacking and single-box contents of 15-35 kg. Match the rating to the job — a folding pallet box for heavy bulk parts, a folding tote for retail replenishment.

The honest rule of thumb: if the box comes back empty on a repeating route, collapsible almost always wins on total cost. If it ships one-way, stays put, or runs automation, rigid wins.

Running the real cost math (not just the sticker price)

1. Cycles/year — how many out-and-back loops each box makes. 2. Idle storage cost — floor area × months idle; collapsible flat-packs cut this sharply. 4. Repair/replacement — rigid tends to survive more cycles; budget hinge wear on collapsible.
